Biscuits!!

So, I tried out 3 different recipes for gluten free biscuits.

IMG_0229

Surprisingly they were all good. My favorite is #3 pictured here. It was Closest to a traditional biscuit. Coming in second place was #1. They look odd, because for some reason they came out purple in the baking precess. That is right, the dough was not purple!  or not like this anyway, because I was quite surprised.  Third place, is still tasty, a little bit denser, making for a good biscuit for sandwiches!

place 1     Whole lifestyle  almond biscuits!

with Blanched almond flour, coconut oil, butter, eggs, honey and bake soda and salt. you can get the recipe here

Biscuit number 3

Ingredients

  • 3/4 tsp homemade baking powder, see recipe
  • 3/4 tsp unrefined sea salt
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp grass fed butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp raw honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Mix together the almond flour, baking powder and unrefined sea salt.
  3. With a pastry cutter or fork, work in the butter and coconut oil until you have a crumbly mixture.
  4. Add eggs and honey and mix well to form dough.
  5. Spoon onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes.

IMG_0232 IMG_0233

here I toasted with coconut oil and put some NUTZO butter on top and let me tell you…OMG(osh) delish!!

place 2  Second place is a biscuit from a friends Facebook post…so I don’t know where she got it! These are really soft like bread rolls.  They puffed up like yeast rolls would (then promptly fell! LOL)

Here is how I made them..

Biscuit number 1

  • 1/2 C + 2 TBSP  blanched almond flour
  • 1/4 C   coconut flour
  • 5 TBSP  psyllium Husk powder (no substitute, but save for adding to smoothies!)
  • 2 tsp  Bake powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  •           ………..
  • 3 eggs  (can exchange 1 egg for 2 TBSP coconut oil, 2 TBSP butter)
  • 1 C boiling water
  1. mix  dry ingredients together
  2. add eggs, then boiling water, mixing well
  3. use 1/4 c measure, then flatten out
  4. Bake at 350 for 15 in
  5. Optional: add a TBSP honey

place 3

Third place goes to the biscuits from Elana’s Pantry.

I will add that I rolled them out too thin and will make them thicker next time.

there are only 6 simple ingredients: blanched almond flour, sea salt, bake soda, coconut oil, eggs and honey. you can find the recipe here.

Biscuit number 2

  1. In a medium bowl, combine almond flour, salt and baking soda
  2. In a large bowl, blend together coconut oil, eggs and honey
  3. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet until a nice dough forms
  4. Roll out dough between 2 pieces of parchment paper to ¾ inches thick
  5. Dust dough with extra almond flour if it is sticky and/or misbehaving
  6. Cut the dough into biscuits using a mason jar with a 2 ½-inch wide mouth
  7. Using a spatula, transfer biscuits to a parchment lined baking sheet
  8. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes, until biscuits are browned on the bottom edges
  9. Serve with gravy, jelly or whatever else your heart desires

Makes about 7 biscuits

just a note….

I found all these recipes to be easy to make and I had all the ingredients on hand (well I did have to go get the psyllium husk powder, but that was good because I could also use in smoothies!)

Bonus:

Since you read ALL THE WAY through this post…I will honor your efforts with a recipe that you certainly would not expect!! Drum roll please! Now for the best Old Fashioned Biscuits that I have ever made! NOT GF, Egg Free or even Healthy!!

Biscuits: The Real Southern Kind

  • 2 C self rising flour
  • 1 stick butter (=8 Tbsp) The real stuff that is organic AND Grass fed
  • 2 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 C milk
  1. turn oven to 425
  2. add ACV to milk, and let stand
  3. cut butter into flour. Some use cold only, I used softened. you decide!Leaving larger chunks of butter will make for flakier fall apart biscuits.
  4. make a well in the flour, pour milk in it and Stir all together
  5. stir until a nice dough is formed
  6. sprinkle counter with flour, dump dough and knead a little like paydough!
  7. roll out with a rolling pin to desired thickness. I did about 3/4 to 1 inch. remember that they will double in height, so use that as your guide.
  8. bake for 10-12 min. tops will be golden brown.

*Consider doubling or tripling the recipe (maybe the second time you make them!!)

* you can substitute the butter with bacon grease (yep, up the UNhealthy quotient!), lard or even heavy cream.

If you want to watch the LOVELY Molly Ann give a tutorial, you can. Here is a video of them being made…this is Molly Ann, not me! (like her on facebook and follow her blog…if you like some good clean humor!!)

Doggie Recipes (treats, sprays, odors, etc)

I thought that it would be nice to see some recipes that are fun for your pets. Some are tasty and others are better choices than heavy duty chemical bombs! I really don’t like to use those heavy duty chemicals on my dogs or my family!

NingXia Ice cube treats   ice cubes

  • mix 2 Tbsp of NingXia Red and 4 oz water
  • fill ice tray and freeze
  • serve as a treat

The coolest ever ice cube treat filled with toys!!

huge dog ice cube

Fill a stock pot with water and toss some toys, balls and whatever in. Stick it in the freezer until it is frozen through. Dump it out onto a tray on a hot day, for all kinds of fun.

What else do I do? I add Nutritional yeast to my dogs food. I let up some in the winter, although I really shouldn’t , because it is just that …Nutritional! I use it because it naturally repels fleas and ticks.  Nutritional Yeast is rich in many basic nutrients such as the B vitamins, chromium, 16 amino acids, 14 or more minerals, and 17 vitamins (not including vitamins A, C,and E).

Yeast is also high in phosphorus 12. Nutirtional yeast should not be confused with Live bakers yeast which can deplete the body of B vitamins and other nutrients.

Nutritional yeast is an excellent high protein and high energy food!

Another great choice is Apple Cider vinegar added to their water or food. Start with just a tad, then as they get used to the new flavor, you can add a little more. You can also just add on top of their food.

Many vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and substances are available in Bragg ACV to improve the health of your dog. Bragg ACV can provide them with enzymes and important minerals, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine, phosphorus, iron, silicon and other trace minerals. The vitamins contained in Bragg ACV are bioflavonoids (vitamin P), beta-carotene (precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, E, B1, B2, and B6. Tannins from the crushed cell walls of fresh apples as well as malic acid, tartaric acid, propionic acid, acetic acid and pectin (fiber) are also contained in Bragg ACV. Be sure to purchase Bragg, organic unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally fermented ACV for its medicinal features. Bragg ACV ranges in color from a light golden to orange. You’ll know you’ve found the right stuff if you see sediment, referred to as the “mother of vinegar” on the bottom of the bottle. Do NOT buy white distilled vinegar, as it has none of the beneficial elements listed above.

Sunday is Cookday!

I love to cook on Sundays. we go to the farmers market for our weekly shopping on Saturdays, then after church on Sunday, I am free to play in the kitchen.

IMG_8973

I always have something new that i want to cook and I usually put together some jarred salads for the week, so that I have a head start on lunches. This is so helpful because lunch seems to be my busiest time where I can be on a roll and forget to eat….then I am so hungry that I will reach for really bad choices( for e that is sugar or chips). But if the salad is there and ready, voila, fewer bad choices made. I like to use the quart sized jars and layer carrots, and maybe some cukes or zukes, maybe some chickpeas, then nuts or seeds (my favs are sunflower and pumpkin), maybe some goat or sheep cheese in a couple (I try to have non-cow dairy only a couple of times a week) and then I top with mixed greens. I like to use scissors to cut up the greens before i drop them in, then they are ready to eat without having any pieces that are too big to eat. you can put your dressing in the bottom of your jar or wait and add when you are ready to eat. I prefer to wait, but I have done both ways and they both work great. Funny, I have just realized that I almost always do my lunch salads first because they make the biggest difference in  my good eating habits!

Then, I move on to make breakfast for the following week.

IMG_8744

This is a recipe that I LOVE called Coconut Creme. It is like a yogurt but made with young thai coconuts. Not at all coconut tasting. I like to add fresh blueberries and a tad of Ninxgia Berry Syrup.

I am also trying out A Super Cereal Blend That is made of nuts, seeds and quinoa and you prepare it like oatmeal.

then there are smoothies, but no prep needed for them!

Juices: I LOVE juicing, but sometimes I just don’t have (Okay, MAKE the time) to make it happen. I have a new little trick that I love. On Sundays (or any day!) I will juice a bunch of goodies and then freeze them in ice cube trays. This is a particularly helpful way to keep the leftover coconut water that comes from the thai coconuts when making the Creme. More on this in the breakfast post!

My favorite part is probably the goodies that I make from cleaning out the refrigerator. Sometimes it will be grilled or sauteed vegetables, or maybe a sauce  or chopped vegetable salad. Most often it ends up being a soup. Kitchen Sink soup is what I usually call it (that sounds better than Dump soup, because after all I dump all the leftover ingredients from the fridge in!)

IMG_0231

But today I made FOOD BABE’S Wedding Weight Loss soup. As I was making it today when my eldest stopped by for a visit. It is a half way between a chicken soup and one of our family favorites- White Christmas Chili. I’ll say this….It is delicious! I am so glad that i made a double recipe so I could send said daughter home with plenty and I will still have plenty leftover.  I changed it up a little and squeezed some fresh Meyer Lemon juice in to the soup. YUM. (the photo does not do this dish justice!)

Today I also caught up on a few things that I had been wanting to make. One recipe was another one from Food Babe. Almond Butter Brownies. I’l just say this- my daughter and I are stuffed. There were only 3 pieces left. I guess I will be making more!!

IMG_0225

They contain: almond butter, ground flaxseed,  salt, baking soda, coconut palm sugar and chocolate chips ( we used enjoy life because the are cleaner and dairy free). such simple ingredients!! get the recipe here

We ate them too fast to  show the full pan of them…Oh MY GOSH they are delicious!!

The second thing on my baking to do list was almond (gluten free and dairy free biscuits). I tried 3 different recipes. One was like a light and fluffy roll. The other 2 were more like a biscuit and cornbread combo. I tried 2 of the three hot out of the oven…then I just couldn’t eat any more….remember I had that delicious soup and 1/2 a pan of brownies! I’ll report my favorite when I try them in the morning. Looking forward to it already!

Fur Babies. You love them, treat them naturally.

IMG_8755

I want to use the best products for my family and for myself. I want to use less chemicals and mostly organic. I also want to save money while doing so. That isn’t too much to ask is it? And you know what, I want the same for my puppies! Well, technically  they aren’t puppies but 40-50 pound toddlers at 1 and 1 1/2. Aren’t they just the cutest??!!

NOTE: these are suggestions for some alternative treatments. None are meant to diagnose, and none have guarantees. They are however suggestions of what has worked for others.  Many are personal testimonies of worked for their own dogs, a couple i have used on my own dogs. They are merely a place to start if you are looking for something other than pricey and possibly unhealthy RX types drugs. In many cases the prescription is what you will need, so make your own judgement call.

There are so many ways that I can do this……

Pumpkin Puree: add some to their food at least a few days a week for digestive health, urinary health and weight loss. This festive gourd is a miracle food for dogs. Good for both diarrhea and constipation, canned pumpkin (not raw, not the sugary, spicy pie filling) is loaded with fiber and beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. Don’t give Buddy a lot of it—too much A is highly toxic to dogs—but a couple of teaspoons a day for little pups, or a couple of tablespoons for big boys, should keep them right on track. Fiber isn’t all that pumpkin has to offer. Pumpkin flesh and seeds are loaded with other nutrients like vitamins C and E, alpha  carotene, lutein, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc. Altogether, the nutritional benefits of pumpkin mean healthier skin, healthier eyes, a healthier coat and a healthier immune system for your dog. That’s not too shabby for a treat that your dog probably will think is a delicious indulgence anyway. A miracle food indeed.
Small dogs= 2 tsp         Large dogs= 2 Tablespoons

braggACV: (Apple cider vinegar- Bragg’s is the one with the ‘Mother” in it) Bragg ACV can provide them with enzymes and important minerals, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine, phosphorus, iron, silicon and other trace minerals. Be sure to purchase organic unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally fermented ACV for its medicinal features. Want to read a little more about this? Try here to learn more like antibiotic properties, itching and arthritis relief.

A teaspoon added to water or food 2–3 times a week should suffice as a preventative measure.

Or, add a teaspoon to a large bowl of water daily. This will increase your dog’s appetite, as well as balancing the pH levels of the dog’s body. Apple cider vinegar will help improve diarrhea episodes and can fix constipation in a dog with repeated use.

Use apple cider vinegar to remove fleas from your dog. Bathe your dog with the usual dog shampoo or soap. Follow with a rinse of apple cider vinegar. Make sure to work it through the coat evenly to cover all points. The shampoo or soap suffocate the fleas and the apple cider vinegar removes them from the dog’s coat, as they can’t handle the odor or taste.

Clean out your dog’s ears using apple cider vinegar. The anti-bacterial properties of apple cider vinegar make it ideal to clean dog ears out. Soak a small cotton ball or piece of clean cloth in the vinegar and gently wipe the ears as carefully as you can.    And there is more! read here

peace & calmingPeace and Calming Essential Oil (young living): this is some good stuff for sure! Does thunder scare your pup and send him running to you (or under your bed) for safety? Rub a drop or 2 between your hands (dilute with a carrier oil if this is the first time, especially for smaller dogs) and pet your dog along her back. win-win! This pretty little bottle also works for Car rides, obedience training, depression, stress, anxiety, calming, hospitalization, airplane travel, boarding and kenneling, colic in horses and birthing situations. I used this on my sons dog when we had to ship him out to Colorado in the belly of a cargo plane. I put a little on his fur and then a few drops on the towel we placed in the kennel. When we got to the airport and put him in the kennel (new to him), and he laid right down. It was so noisy, I really expected a little pacing or something!! My sister in law has a cat that HATES the car. It isn’t possible to avoid the car altogether, and when she had a long drive ahead… Peace and Calming to the rescue! Kitty relaxed for the entire trip.

yeastNutritional Yeast: Fleas particularly dislike the flavor of garlic and yeast (nutritional or brewer’s yeast). Mixing garlic and yeast with your pet’s food can render their blood unpalatable to fleas. (However, due to risks associated with garlic which affect cats and some breeds of dogs, it is generally recommended that you avoid feeding your pets concentrated amounts of garlic.) Use about a teaspoon of unprocessed  nutritional yeast daily for cats and small dogs, and a tablespoon for a 50-pound dog. (Some animals are yeast intolerant and will react with a skin allergy. Discontinue use if this occurs.) Nutritional yeast is also a source of Biotin, a water-soluble B vitamin that plays a part in metabolizing energy. Thiamine in the nutritional yeast is a natural component of therapy for the prevention of flea infestation.  It is also a good source of protein, just keep the dose low as mentioned above. Therefore, it is an excellent addition to the diet of normal healthy dogs.

So, I mentioned Peace and calming earlier as a terrific tool for fear and anxiety, but if you want an arsenal of better ways to care for the other issues your family pet might have, essential oils are awesome at doing the job well. In another post, I described how essential oils work great on my family, now I’ll explain how well they work on my pets. I am starting with the most commonly used oils because these come in the everyday oils kit which is part of the Premium starter kit. That kit is such a savings that often it is the best place to start. You might find that you really only deal with thunder and just one oil will do for you.

peppermint

use Peppermint in their water bowl or “petted” on if your dog is experiencing Vomiting, Arthritis, Nausea, Diarrhea, Parasites. And to provide pain relief, and for ear mites and ear infections, travel nausea, as an anti-fungal, anti-tumoral, and as an anti-inflammatory. Of course these are the same ways that peppermint works on people too! Oh, and bad breath knocking you out, add a drop of peppermint to their water.

lemon

Lemon is an antioxidant and works for anxiety, obesity, lipomas, urinary tract infections, digestive complications, and  hypertension.

I read a story of how lemon helped a pup who had extremely low red blood cells after ingesting anti freeze. 1 drop on the paw twice daily. 2.5 days later  the count was up to 24 from 13 (normal is 37-52) Then they added grapefruit to detox from the antifreeze and meds given by doctor. her count raised up to 38. Wow!

lavender2Lavender also calms.

It is great for healing burns, cuts, scrapes, frostbite, skin conditions and as a parasite repellant. One dog had chronic ear infections and his pet parent mixed 3 tsp of coconut oil with 5-6 drops of lavender. Then massaged it around the outside of his ear and on the inside of the floppy ear (NOT inside the canal). gone.

frankFrankincense is as amazing for pets as it is for people! use this for Lumps, tumors, cancer, cysts, seizures, depression, auto-immune disorders, behavioral conditions, newborns, regulating immune system, brain disorders. Wondering how this can help newborn pups? i just read a testimonial of german shepherd breeders that have large litters (10-12) pups, but usually lost 1-2 pups per litter. They began to put frankincense on the umbilical cord as they are born, and now the survival rate is 100%. That is a small miracle for sure!

thievesThieves is the illness buster. Immune boosting, anti-viral, strangles, ringworm, anti-fungal, anti-septic, anti-bacterial, reducing allergy symptoms, equine herpes virus.

valor

Valor is very unique. It can help your dog or cat with courage, confidence, bravery, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, competition and showing, broken bones and joint health. One owner used this for separation anxiety and saw great improvements from a dog that used to chew blinds, remotes, shoes and anything plastic. Now she sits and waits at the door and only occasionally finds a soda can left out and pretends it is a chew toy.

panaway

PanAway is for pain management, arthritis, cruciate injuries (knees), sprains, bruising, sore  muscles, joint discomfort, and increases circulation.

purification

Purification works on abscesses, kennel cough, insect repellant and bites, reducing transmission of diseases, upper respiratory infections, lacerations, external parasites and…..wait for it…. here is the drum roll… skunk odors! Okay, well other odors too.

Some other oils that will be beneficial for fur babies are DiGize, Raven and Aroma life.

Emotional issues? Yep pets have those too. especially maybe one that hasn’t been with the same people for their whole life. Sometimes surgery or moving can cause issue. My vet has even mentioned that the death of a pal can really send them spiraling often into depression. There is help without heavy chemical meds!

Toothpaste. Really important as part of your healthcare??

Back in the day people would have brushed their teeth with Baking Soda. The funny thing is that Baking Soda still has terrific cleaning power and benefits for your oral health care. So why did that change? Mostly because big companies found a way to put it in a tube, make it minty and sweet, and sell millions on the advantages of fluoride. As it often happens, the original intent of improved care has been proven to be detrimental to our bodies (how about mercury fillings…yeah, that was a big mistake!!)

Brushing-Teeth

Dental hygiene products that you and your family use every day may contain toxins that have been linked to cancer, blindness, and even death. Have you checked out the ingredients in your toothpaste or mouthwash lately? If not, go get your toothpaste right now and see if any of these ingredients are in your toothpaste.  Many name-brand toothpastes and mouthwashes contain potentially harmful ingredients, which are made up of very small molecules that may penetrate through the tissue of your mouth, enter the blood stream, and build up in the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and tissues.

If that is NOT what you really want, then you might want to think about natural toothpaste. I have tried a few. Tom’s of Maine makes a couple of good options that are fluoride free. So does Kiss My Face.

Still, I decided to try making toothpaste myself. I mean, really , how difficult can it be if just using baking soda alone is a good choice.

coconutoil_toothpaste1

So, what ingredients would I need? I did a little research, and found that the important ingredients are Coconut oil, baking soda, and real salt or sea salt. read more here.  A properly made toothpaste can even heal cavities (here is a good story about that too)

I started by wetting my toothbrush and dipping it in baking soda. The first day it was a little…what’s the word…pungent? By day 2 or 3, didn’t give it a second thought. I read a little more and decided to step up the game!

There are lots of recipes to choose from. I looked them over and decided to try out my own version. First, I did coconut oil, baking soda and Real Salt. Equal parts…I am not a salt person and this was very salty, but honestly after a couple of days, it was doable. But I wanted to like it! So, I made a new version with more coconut oil (softer to be able to squeeze through a tube), less salt, and more baking soda. I also added essential oil (peppermint and Thieves) and one version had bentonite clay.  Lots of the recipes wanted you to add water to the mix, but i found that it separated back out. I would suggest fractionated coconut oil if you feed the need for more liquid. Fractionated coconut oil stays in a liquid form while the regular kind solidifies at around 72 degrees.

Read why to use Baking soda here. If you want a smile like Julia Roberts, read how here and why it isn’t too abrasive. Good for Halitosis, gum disease, and whitening (see more)!

Coconut oil has been getting so many raves these lasts few years. I have been using it for cooking for years (great at high temps where others break down and turn toxic), then started using it as a skin moisturizer. now it is in my deodorant and toothpaste! Benefits

Salt in toothpaste you ask? Yep. If you use the right kind (NOT bleached and processed table salt) you get all kinds of minerals. read more

Bentonite clay (like this oneread benefits here

Xylitol: used as a healthy sweetener that doesn’t cause dental destruction. Here are some more facts and a little something for those who love  science!

My Heavenly Homemade Toothpaste:

tube 3

  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp real Salt
  • 20 drops peppermint essential oil (in one version I added Theives too)
  • 10 drops Myrrh (The Heavenly part because if it is good enough for baby Jesus, it is good enough for me!)

optional: bentonite clay (i used the liquid kind instead of the powder)

optional: Xylitol. This will sweeten it up in a healthy for your teeth way. This is a great addition if  you have kids and want them to like this toothpaste as much as the store bought C#%P!

mix all together with a fork (use a PLASTIC one if adding clay!!). Then adjust to the consistency that you want by adding  more baking soda if it is too runny, or coconut oil if it is too dry. you could also add clove or cinnamon oil as an option. I once bought a natural mint and orange toothpaste, it was really good, so orange might be a good choice.

I found that these GoTubes like those Pictured above are easy to fill and work terrific! they aren’t cheap, but they are great. I broke down and bought them for travel. I think that they will last forever!

Anyway, moving on…here is what your typical commercial toothpaste contains: (You’ll see they are loaded with dangerous toxins and chemicals such as sodium fluoride, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and hydrated silica.)

better stripes

Sodium Fluoride: The main ingredient in toothpaste and rat poison. Many people are probably aware that most toothpaste and many mouth rinses contain fluoride because that’s what dentists have recommended for years to prevent cavities. But did you know that most popular toothpastes contain enough fluoride to kill a small child within 2 to 4 hours? on top of that, fluoride is also added to our drinking water! (WARNING: Keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, get medical help right away. In children and youth, minimal ingestion of sodium fluoride causes salivation, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, and diarrhea. Large doses of the carcinogen may cause paralysis, muscular weakness and clonic convulsions, followed by respiratory and cardiac failure.)

It’s no wonder that fluoride can cause death in humans! In addition to being one of the main ingredients in toothpaste as well as rat and cockroach poisons, sodium fluoride is also a key component in anesthetic, hypnotic, and psychiatric drugs and SARIN NERVE GAS!

Fluorides have been used throughout history to alter the behavior and mood of human beings. It is a little known fact that fluoride compounds were added to the drinking water of prisoners to keep them quiet and to hamper non-compliance with authority, both in Nazi prison camps during World War II and in the Soviet gulags in Siberia. And they add this to our drinking water??

Surprisingly, fluoride has NEVER been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA. Additionally, a 1990 study stated that fluoride has been shown to NOT reduce cavities and scientists are now linking fluoride to dental deformity, arthritis, allergic reactions and about 10,000 unnecessary deaths each year from cancer.

Want just a little more? here you go….. you will certainly want to say goodbye to fluoride after all this.

tubes

Dyes/Colorings:  Are you eating crude oil for breakfast? There are artificial dyes/colorings often found in familiar toothpaste brands and a wide variety of other products. Recent studies indicate that FD & C Blue Dyes 1 & 2 can trigger a wide number of behavioral, learning, and health problems.

FD&C color dyes may also cause potentially severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, fatigue, nervousness, lack of concentration, and cancer. Yuck! All this from brushing your teeth with pretty colors?

Using FD & C Blue Dyes 1 & 2 is just like ingesting crude oil as it too, is synthesized from petroleum. These dyes were originally made from coal tar oil, which is a black, sticky tar by-product of steel making and petroleum distillation, and is a source of numerous complex chemicals. Through repeated human exposure, some of these isolated coal tar components were classified as active carcinogens, ultimately leading to US government regulations and restrictions. Nowadays, coal tar dyes are synthetically engineered rather than extracted from actual coal tar, thereby greatly reducing the possibility of being contaminated with carcinogenic residuals from the coal itself. However, the dyes still contain carcinogenic properties. Over several decades of use, some of these synthetic dyes have come under greater scientific and government scrutiny due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic activity. Because of this, they are still referred to in the industry as – coal tar dyes – according to the US FDA.

Even if toothpaste is never swallowed, these dyes can be absorbed within seconds through the skin on the lips, or through the mucous membrane in the mouth. According to the Physician’s Desk Reference, the mucosal lining inside of the mouth has an absorption efficiency of over 90 percent. Because of this, these carcinogens get into your blood, your brain, and your cells in no time at all – especially when you consider most people use dental care products 2 to 3 times a day.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): The most dangerous ingredient

Perhaps the most dangerous ingredient in personal-care products is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Because SLS has a foaming property, it is added to toothpastes in order to generate foam and give the impression that the toothpaste is working. However, SLS has been found to be quite corrosive and harmful to skin tissue says a report by the American College of Toxicity.

In the cleaning industry, SLS is used in products such as garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Elsewhere, SLS is used for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin.

The journal of the American College of Toxicology reports that SLS can penetrate and be retained in the eye, brain, heart, and liver with potentially harmful longterm effects. Also found in most shampoos including “no tears” baby shampoos, SLS can keep children’s eyes from developing properly, can cause cataracts in adults, can retard healing, and can impair hair growth.

too much

Another thought to keep in mind is how much you use. If you are using as much as they show on TV then you are adding even MORE poison into your system.

If you have a mouth full of foam that you can hardly keep in your built in water well (you know, that well under your tongue) then this is probably you!

just right

Consider using a smaller amount. If you have the Oral B type of toothbrush then you are using the right amount. about the size of a pea.  oral b

Triclosan: A pesticide found in many types of toothpaste

Triclosan, a chemical used for its antibacterial properties, is an ingredient found in many detergents and toothpastes. However, the formulation and structure of this ingredient are similar to some of the most toxic chemicals on earth. Because of this fact, triclosan has been scrutinized in regards to human health and safety, according to Tufts University School of Medicine.

While the companies that manufacture products containing triclosan claim that it is safe, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a dangerous pesticide. The EPA gives triclosan high scores both as a human health risk and as an environmental risk.

Triclosan is a chlorophenol, which is a class of chemicals that is suspected of causing cancer in humans. Externally, phenol can cause a variety of skin irritations, but since it can temporarily deactivate sensory nerve endings, contact with it may cause little or no pain. Taken internally, even in small amounts, phenol can lead to cold sweats, circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma, and death. Additionally, chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides can be stored in body fat, sometimes accumulating to toxic levels. Long term exposure to repeated use of many pesticide products can damage the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs, suppress the immune system, and cause hormonal disruption, paralysis, sterility and brain hemorrhages.

Hydrated Silica: A whitener that damages tooth enamel

Hydrated silica, which is primarily used as an abrasive in toothpaste, is made from a crystallized compound found in quartz, sand, and flint. Tooth enamel re-mineralizes daily from the supply of ionic calcium and phosphorus in the saliva. Scratching the surface of the tooth with an abrasive such as hydrated silica harms the enamel and prevents re-mineralization, much like using sand to clean glass. Severe wear could eventually occur.

Dr. Samuel Epstein, who is Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition and recipient of The Alternative Nobel Prize in 1998, states in his book – The amount of irritation caused by toothpaste is minimal but can include sore mouth and gums, wearing away of tooth enamel, sore tongue, and sloughing of mucous membrane. The public is cautioned against excessive use of products containing ‘dioforms,’ which are abrasive substances that can cause the breakdown of tooth enamel.

Products containing the ingredients silica and cellulose, in particular, should be avoided when gum disease, tooth decay, sensitivity and receding gums are present. While these ingredients can remove tartar and make teeth whiter in appearance, they also may do harm to dental health by altering the acidic balance of the mouth, gums and tongue, said Dr. Warren Scherer, New York University College of Dentistry, as reported by The Naples Daily News.

beads

One even has plastic. We all know that the BPA in plastics can be hazardous to our health, and yet it has been put into our toothpaste! see video

NingXia red and NingXia Nitro- Just an ounce a day is all you need!

club red

Ningxia Red: a real powerhouse! (pronounced Neeng-sha Red)

ningxia packets

Ningxia Red: those little packets that came in your kit that look like small Capri Sun packs.  I probably left mine in the fridge for at least a month before I  tried one; lets face it, the packaging doesn’t look very appetizing. But OH MY GOODNESS!  After I tried it I was like, “What was I waiting for?!?”  Even without chilling it, it is pretty good (lots of fruity essence and of course the ningxia wolfberry juice).  But it’s more than a yummy drink, well here, this is what I know about it:

  • it is a powerful antioxidant drink that contains whole Ningxia wolfberry puree—a super blend of blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices, natural stevia extract, grape seed extract, pure vanilla extract, and orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine essential oils. Its health benefits include support from head to toe, via a whole body nutrient infusion. NingXia Wolfberries have been cherished for centuries for its health, energy, and longevity benefits. Whole Ningxia wolfberries and other nutrient-dense fruit juices make NingXia Red the perfect choice for optimizing wellness and stepping up to a whole new level of health.
  • Let’s just say, if you have a health concern, a beauty concern, an emotional concern, a mental concern or just an energy concern, start drinking 1-2 oz. of this beautiful stuff once or twice every day.
  • While not technically an oil or oil blend, it is still oily because it has essential oils infused in it.
  • For me, it’s about getting enough antioxidants, especially when my fruit and veggie consumption isn’t up to par. And, you know we need those antioxidants to support our immune systems and fight nasty cancer cells.  Ningxia Red is the #1 antioxidant product on the market today.  It’s all about the Ningxia Wolfberry having “the highest known protection against the dangerous superoxide free radicals as documented in the S-ORAC test conducted by Brunswick Laboratories”.  Or we can just say it ‘s rich in all sorts of good stuff like polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals.
  •  I also love the energy boost it gives me in the afternoon. On those days when I need the extra boost, I am glad that i have it handy to get an extra shot for a pick me up!  I ordered Ningxia Red packets so I can take them when i travel. You can also add to a  healthy morning smoothie.  This is more of an endorsement if you know how this person doesn’t like vegetables and tells restaurant wait staff that she “eats like a 5 year old”.
  • Some drink it because it helps regulate blood sugar levels. I’ve read testimonies regarding type I diabetes; you can search in Drops of Love or oil-testimonies.com for more on that. (let me know if you want to be added to Drops of Love on Facebook)
  • Also check out oil-testimonies.com regarding Ningxia Red and rheumatiod arthritis, probably any auto-immune disorder: because of the immune boosting power of this stuff it is a great addition to dealing with those issues.
  • It helps give clarity when mental fatigue strikes.

ningxia bottles

  • I love it chilled, straight up, but some prefer it diluted in water or juice. Others like it in their morning smoothies.  I actually but some in a Mimosa last weekend!  You can buy it in 750ml bottles or boxes of 2 oz packets.  The glass bottles are kind of cool but I like to be able to keep a couple of packets in my purse so I usually go that route; personal preference.
  • and what about your kiddos… could anything be better than sending them off to school with a powerhouse ounce of vitamin filled goodness??

Now do you wanna know what is in this liquid gold??ningxia red

Pumpkin Nut Butter

IMG_8917

I absolutely ADORE pumpkin! I make pumpkin smoothies, homemade Pumpkin latte’s (I don’t trust all the added junk in the syrup at coffee houses), pumpkin soup, pumpkin cheesecake, and now…. pumpkin peanut butter! I had this at a friends house and became obsessed after I almost ate the entire confection!

Pumpkin Peanut (or almond) Butter

Ingredients:

1 C    Pumpkin Puree (not pie filling)

1 C    Peanut butter (or almond)

1/2 C Honey or maple sugar  (more/less to taste)

1 Tbsp Vanilla

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

Apple Slices for dipping into the deliciousness! or just a spoon!

Instructions:

blend all ingredients until smooth ( i used a vitamix the first time and a food processor the second)

cover and refrigerate for 30 min

serve with apple slices

Note: if using fresh ground peanut butter, this will not be as sweet as store bought sugared peanut butter mix. This also makes a great base/addition to a smoothie.

The Seed to Seal Promise, why this is so important!

Essential oils have been around since before the Bible was written. Now that is longevity! The reason why this is so interesting is that people have been using them as powerful healers well before Merck or GlaxoSmithKline made commercials touting the benefits of chemicals and all the side effects that go hand in hand.

IMG_5979

Now we have a company that has made it a priority to grow, harvest, distill the highest quality plants into usable oils that can help to relieve the discomfort of common ailments. The aim is to get these high quality oils into every home. The company is 20 years old, but the founder has been using them in clinics and the like for many years before beginning Young Living. There is a sign in the distillery that reminds all who pass through and work there that Quality is the priority. As simple as the sign is…It speaks volumes.

Almost all of us have some sort of “issue” that bothers us. You might get headaches, while I live with a dog that I am allergic to, my husband snores and has some sleep apnea, my oldest child is full of stress with a new job and studying for her CPA exam, another one works outdoors and often cuts or burns himself. I could go on longer, but you get the idea.

Does this make you excited like it does me? want to read more about the promise of purity in bringing clean, powerful , healing oils from plants into our homes?

Thieves

thieves

Thieves, Just does SOOOO much! Especially, in this cold and flu Season. For example:

  • I put this on the bottoms of my feet  or rub on my hands before going somewhere germy like planes, malls and classrooms.  (Do you know of anyone else who goes on planes and into malls and classrooms?)
  • It is also great for sore teeth after braces adjustments. My friend used on her teeth and gums after having dental work done and my son swished with coconut oil after having all 4 wisdom teeth removed. That is how we fight bacterial infections here!
  • I gargled, swished, swallowed in a capsule and applied to my feet  when I thought I might be coming down with something. Then I have the family do the same thing.
  • I like to put a few drops in a small spray bottle with water and a little witch hazel to use as air freshener. (I was sure to shake well before spraying; as you know, oil and water don’t really mix.)
  • I bought the Thieves cleaner that is highly concentrated and use it on everything from mirrors and glass tabletops to the greasy stove.  (I just dilute accordingly.) And it smells SO good, not like the  chemically cloroxy can’t breathe stuff.
  • Diffuse, Diffuse, Diffuse. It just  smells sooo good and when tested at Weber State University, it was found to have a 99.96% kill rate on airborne bacteria!
  • and just a few more from my list of when to use: viruses, colds, flu, sore throats, bronchitis, strep, toothaches, gums, cold sores, infections, cuts, poison ivy, add a drop to wine, candida, coughs, pneumonia, fungus, strengthen immunity.
  • how to use: diffuse, ingest, topical. Dilute with a carrier oil if skin is sensitive.

This is one of Young Living’s (YL) most popular blends.

Love ya,

Stephanie
