Breakfast. A great place to start!

I start my day with warm water and lemon and/or turmeric tea. Turmeric tea is what I look forward to every day! (Shh don’t tell anyone I left out the extra “r” in the sketch below- it was before I realized it had that R!) you can read more here

I love my new(ish) discovery of Young Thai Coconuts. I use the juice and the meat for so many things (the recipe below, smoothies, and add the water to my juice blends).

IMG_8744

Lemon Creme (with Blueberry)

  • meat from 3 young Thai coconuts
  • 1/2 C lemon juice, and zest
  • 1/4 C honey
  • 2 TBSP Coconut Butter (can use all oil)
  • 2 TBSP Coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • seeds from a vanilla bean, pos discarded

Put all in a Vitamix and blend til smooth. Add water or coconut water so that it is a little runny. Then  Refrigerate and chia seeds will firm it up  I like mine at a yogurt consistency, but sometimes it is more like a thick pudding. This photo has blueberries and Young Living ningxia berry syrup and it is SO delicious!

IMG_0219Super Cereal Blend

 Ingredients:

  • 1 C Buckwheat
  • 1 C Millet
  • 1 C  Quinoa
  • 1 C Amaranth
  • 1/2 C Sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 C Chia seeds

put all ingredients in a container. I first poured into the jar…but then i couldn’t mix them. So I dumped them into a bag, gave a couple of good shakes, then poured back into the jar for storing.

For Un-soaked cereal;

  • 1/4 C of Super Cereal Blend
  • 1 Cup water

Rinse porridge well in a fine mesh sieve.   bring  to a boil, then simmer 20 min.  Enjoy with warm milk, sweetener of choice, spices, fresh fruit and superfoods (goji berries. I love to use cinnamon, maple syrup, nut milk and blueberries . Sometimes I also do cranberries and toss those into the water while boiling.

Soaked Cereal:

  • 1/4  C Super cereal blend
  • 1/2  C water
  • 1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar

Rinse cereal well using a fine mesh sieve (I have started skipping this step!). place in a small pan with the ACV and cover with boiling water (kettle is fine, i used my hot water dispenser). In the morning, drain and rinse. Add 1/2 cup water, bring to a boil, reduce to simmer for 10 min. Enjoy with warm milk, sweetener of choice, spices, fresh fruit and any superfoods you can.

This came from My New Roots, you can take a peek here

Juice:

I lOVE Juicing! Starting off your day with a green juice, well it just starts the day off right. Sometimes, I am great about juicing fresh daily. Other times, Not so much. So i have a handy little trick. I take a day and juice a ton of stuff with lots of variety. I pour the different juices into jars. Label them..because, although, you THINK that you will remember exactly what is in them, you won’t. Sad but true!  I usually make lots of green juices, a good bit of beet (my favorite), carrot, and often lemon. I like to have lemon handy for all sorts of reasons, so I make little ice cubes out of those. I also will add a lemon to the green ones that i am making. When I am done juicing, i start making juice cubes. I have some small, some medium and some large ice cube trays. I am not quite sure how i collected such a collection! But I do know that I found some that had lids and bought a few for this very reason.

Flash forward a few days or weeks…..Take a few cubes of this and a few of that and put them in  ball jars (because they have lids) and stick them in the fridge to begin a slow thaw.

I am sure that we would all agree that fresh, immediately drank from the juicer is the BETTER way to consume, But as a second choice- this rocks! No preservatives, not pasteurized, only pure goodness.

Are you Wondering what is good to juice?:

Greens: watercress, spinach (but not if you have a weak thyroid), kale, collard, turnip, beet tops, parsley (a LITTLE goes a LONG way!). I like to add in lemon, cucumber and sometimes and maybe dandelion or arugula. Depending on what quantities you have, you can keep the green juice at single ingredients or mix a few of them together. I add the lemon and cuke into other greens.

Red: beets. Beets + carrots. Beets + carrots + orange or lemon. You can even add in a little apple. But the beet is sweet enough, so don’t get carried away and make it counterproductive by making it too sweet.

Orange: Same as before, just leave out the red beets. You can add yellow or orange ones though!

Flu Shot: this is one of my favs! Tumeric root, ginger, lemon. These are a freezer must, so they are handy if you ever feel like you are coming down with something, or if you have been exposed to any sicklies!

General: You can add ginger to any or all of the above. I like to freeze leftover coconut water from making the Lemon Creme (from above) and add those to the juices. Sometimes I add Aloe Vera juice, or just water until I get the consistency and taste that I want.

Just keep in mind that sticking with organic is pretty important here. If you are juicing and getting concentrated nutrients from these vegetables, you will also be getting concentrated pesticides, fungicides and other chemicals! YUCK! The goal is to feed your body, not clog up your liver with toxins.

Smoothies:

More on these later. It will need it’s own post, but yet, couldn’t be left off the breakfast menu!

Ciao,

Stephanie

Banana Bread that Rocks!

banana bread

I made some banana bread tonight that totally rocks! It also happens to be gluten free and dairy free. I chose to add chocolate chips, but you could add walnuts instead. When I decided to make the bread (shouldn’t we really call this cake?? maybe), I looked in the pantry to see what flours that I had available. I was going to use all almond flour, but I didn’t have enough. The recipe below will call for almond flour, but use what works for you- or what you have on hand. Cooking and baking is all about fun, easy and playing with flavors! I was at Canyon Ranch in Tucson last week and the  chef there likes to use certified gluten free Oat flour for all of his gluten free baking. It is easy to find if you look for Bob’s Red Mill brand, they are available in so many places! He likes it because it has good texture, some of the flours are so fine like  corn starch , that it doesn’t work quite as well. Back to the recipe, Where it says Almond flour, use what you like or have on hand. For the bread I made tonight I had 1+  cups of blanched almond flour, a cup + of courser almond flour, so I added about 3/4 cup of oat flour (the made up the final amount to equal 3.5 cups) then 1/4 c chia flour ( because i accidentally added too much oil and I knew that it would help to offset) I am including the extra oil and the chia in the recipe because i like the benefits and protein of chia.(you can reduce oil to 1/4 cup and skip chia if you refer) I used my Vitamix to make flour out of chia seeds, which I always have on hand for smoothies and salads. I also used a combo of coconut oil and olive oil (mostly coconut and topped off with olive to fill measure) Choose which you like or have on hand 🙂  If you choose chocolate chips with or instead of walnuts, be sure to get dark chocolate ones or dairy free ones. I use “enjoy life” brand.

Banana Bread without any guilt (the recipe)

Bowl 1:

3.5 Cups Almond Flour

.25 c chia flour ( or try chia seeds!)

1.25 tsp sea salt

1.25 tsp Baking Soda

.25 tsp gr cardamon

.25 tsp cinnamon

.25 tsp vanilla powder  (or liquid vanilla, but add to liquids)

Bowl 2:

3 large eggs

1/2 c light agave or sweetener of your choice ( i used date sugar because I wanted to try it)

1/2 c oil ( grapeseed, coconut, olive or a combo)

…..

5 Large ripe  Bananas ( I used some that i had frozen for smoothies, worked great!)

1/2 c chopped walnuts or chocolate chips ( go heavy if you really LOVE them, like ME)

1.  preheat oven to 350 and coat mini loaf pans with oil.

2.  place bananas in a food processor and pulse until blended, set aside

3. mix dry ingredients in bowl 1 (larger of the 2)

4. mix wet ingredients in bowl 2

5. fold wet into dry, then fold the combo into the  bananas ( i cheated and lightly mixed then dumped all into the processor and pulsed until well blended)

6. mix in nuts and or chocolate chips  by hand

7. pour into molds, sprinkle with nuts or chips if you like- then bake for 15-17 minutes. Let them cool slightly before removing from the molds.

ENJOY!

Doggie Recipes (treats, sprays, odors, etc)

I thought that it would be nice to see some recipes that are fun for your pets. Some are tasty and others are better choices than heavy duty chemical bombs! I really don’t like to use those heavy duty chemicals on my dogs or my family!

NingXia Ice cube treats   ice cubes

  • mix 2 Tbsp of NingXia Red and 4 oz water
  • fill ice tray and freeze
  • serve as a treat

The coolest ever ice cube treat filled with toys!!

huge dog ice cube

Fill a stock pot with water and toss some toys, balls and whatever in. Stick it in the freezer until it is frozen through. Dump it out onto a tray on a hot day, for all kinds of fun.

What else do I do? I add Nutritional yeast to my dogs food. I let up some in the winter, although I really shouldn’t , because it is just that …Nutritional! I use it because it naturally repels fleas and ticks.  Nutritional Yeast is rich in many basic nutrients such as the B vitamins, chromium, 16 amino acids, 14 or more minerals, and 17 vitamins (not including vitamins A, C,and E).

Yeast is also high in phosphorus 12. Nutirtional yeast should not be confused with Live bakers yeast which can deplete the body of B vitamins and other nutrients.

Nutritional yeast is an excellent high protein and high energy food!

Another great choice is Apple Cider vinegar added to their water or food. Start with just a tad, then as they get used to the new flavor, you can add a little more. You can also just add on top of their food.

Many vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and substances are available in Bragg ACV to improve the health of your dog. Bragg ACV can provide them with enzymes and important minerals, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine, phosphorus, iron, silicon and other trace minerals. The vitamins contained in Bragg ACV are bioflavonoids (vitamin P), beta-carotene (precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, E, B1, B2, and B6. Tannins from the crushed cell walls of fresh apples as well as malic acid, tartaric acid, propionic acid, acetic acid and pectin (fiber) are also contained in Bragg ACV. Be sure to purchase Bragg, organic unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally fermented ACV for its medicinal features. Bragg ACV ranges in color from a light golden to orange. You’ll know you’ve found the right stuff if you see sediment, referred to as the “mother of vinegar” on the bottom of the bottle. Do NOT buy white distilled vinegar, as it has none of the beneficial elements listed above.

Toothpaste. Really important as part of your healthcare??

Back in the day people would have brushed their teeth with Baking Soda. The funny thing is that Baking Soda still has terrific cleaning power and benefits for your oral health care. So why did that change? Mostly because big companies found a way to put it in a tube, make it minty and sweet, and sell millions on the advantages of fluoride. As it often happens, the original intent of improved care has been proven to be detrimental to our bodies (how about mercury fillings…yeah, that was a big mistake!!)

Brushing-Teeth

Dental hygiene products that you and your family use every day may contain toxins that have been linked to cancer, blindness, and even death. Have you checked out the ingredients in your toothpaste or mouthwash lately? If not, go get your toothpaste right now and see if any of these ingredients are in your toothpaste.  Many name-brand toothpastes and mouthwashes contain potentially harmful ingredients, which are made up of very small molecules that may penetrate through the tissue of your mouth, enter the blood stream, and build up in the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and tissues.

If that is NOT what you really want, then you might want to think about natural toothpaste. I have tried a few. Tom’s of Maine makes a couple of good options that are fluoride free. So does Kiss My Face.

Still, I decided to try making toothpaste myself. I mean, really , how difficult can it be if just using baking soda alone is a good choice.

coconutoil_toothpaste1

So, what ingredients would I need? I did a little research, and found that the important ingredients are Coconut oil, baking soda, and real salt or sea salt. read more here.  A properly made toothpaste can even heal cavities (here is a good story about that too)

I started by wetting my toothbrush and dipping it in baking soda. The first day it was a little…what’s the word…pungent? By day 2 or 3, didn’t give it a second thought. I read a little more and decided to step up the game!

There are lots of recipes to choose from. I looked them over and decided to try out my own version. First, I did coconut oil, baking soda and Real Salt. Equal parts…I am not a salt person and this was very salty, but honestly after a couple of days, it was doable. But I wanted to like it! So, I made a new version with more coconut oil (softer to be able to squeeze through a tube), less salt, and more baking soda. I also added essential oil (peppermint and Thieves) and one version had bentonite clay.  Lots of the recipes wanted you to add water to the mix, but i found that it separated back out. I would suggest fractionated coconut oil if you feed the need for more liquid. Fractionated coconut oil stays in a liquid form while the regular kind solidifies at around 72 degrees.

Read why to use Baking soda here. If you want a smile like Julia Roberts, read how here and why it isn’t too abrasive. Good for Halitosis, gum disease, and whitening (see more)!

Coconut oil has been getting so many raves these lasts few years. I have been using it for cooking for years (great at high temps where others break down and turn toxic), then started using it as a skin moisturizer. now it is in my deodorant and toothpaste! Benefits

Salt in toothpaste you ask? Yep. If you use the right kind (NOT bleached and processed table salt) you get all kinds of minerals. read more

Bentonite clay (like this oneread benefits here

Xylitol: used as a healthy sweetener that doesn’t cause dental destruction. Here are some more facts and a little something for those who love  science!

My Heavenly Homemade Toothpaste:

tube 3

  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp real Salt
  • 20 drops peppermint essential oil (in one version I added Theives too)
  • 10 drops Myrrh (The Heavenly part because if it is good enough for baby Jesus, it is good enough for me!)

optional: bentonite clay (i used the liquid kind instead of the powder)

optional: Xylitol. This will sweeten it up in a healthy for your teeth way. This is a great addition if  you have kids and want them to like this toothpaste as much as the store bought C#%P!

mix all together with a fork (use a PLASTIC one if adding clay!!). Then adjust to the consistency that you want by adding  more baking soda if it is too runny, or coconut oil if it is too dry. you could also add clove or cinnamon oil as an option. I once bought a natural mint and orange toothpaste, it was really good, so orange might be a good choice.

I found that these GoTubes like those Pictured above are easy to fill and work terrific! they aren’t cheap, but they are great. I broke down and bought them for travel. I think that they will last forever!

coconutoiltoothpasteF

other recipes:

option 1, option 2, add probiotics,

Anyway, moving on…here is what your typical commercial toothpaste contains: (You’ll see they are loaded with dangerous toxins and chemicals such as sodium fluoride, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and hydrated silica.)

better stripes

Sodium Fluoride: The main ingredient in toothpaste and rat poison. Many people are probably aware that most toothpaste and many mouth rinses contain fluoride because that’s what dentists have recommended for years to prevent cavities. But did you know that most popular toothpastes contain enough fluoride to kill a small child within 2 to 4 hours? on top of that, fluoride is also added to our drinking water! (WARNING: Keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, get medical help right away. In children and youth, minimal ingestion of sodium fluoride causes salivation, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, and diarrhea. Large doses of the carcinogen may cause paralysis, muscular weakness and clonic convulsions, followed by respiratory and cardiac failure.)

It’s no wonder that fluoride can cause death in humans! In addition to being one of the main ingredients in toothpaste as well as rat and cockroach poisons, sodium fluoride is also a key component in anesthetic, hypnotic, and psychiatric drugs and SARIN NERVE GAS!

Fluorides have been used throughout history to alter the behavior and mood of human beings. It is a little known fact that fluoride compounds were added to the drinking water of prisoners to keep them quiet and to hamper non-compliance with authority, both in Nazi prison camps during World War II and in the Soviet gulags in Siberia. And they add this to our drinking water??

Surprisingly, fluoride has NEVER been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA. Additionally, a 1990 study stated that fluoride has been shown to NOT reduce cavities and scientists are now linking fluoride to dental deformity, arthritis, allergic reactions and about 10,000 unnecessary deaths each year from cancer.

Want just a little more? here you go….. you will certainly want to say goodbye to fluoride after all this.

Dyes/Colorings:  Are you eating crude oil for breakfast? There are artificial dyes/colorings often found in familiar toothpaste brands and a wide variety of other products. Recent studies indicate that FD & C Blue Dyes 1 & 2 can trigger a wide number of behavioral, learning, and health problems.

FD&C color dyes may also cause potentially severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, fatigue, nervousness, lack of concentration, and cancer. Yuck! All this from brushing your teeth with pretty colors?

Using FD & C Blue Dyes 1 & 2 is just like ingesting crude oil as it too, is synthesized from petroleum. These dyes were originally made from coal tar oil, which is a black, sticky tar by-product of steel making and petroleum distillation, and is a source of numerous complex chemicals. Through repeated human exposure, some of these isolated coal tar components were classified as active carcinogens, ultimately leading to US government regulations and restrictions. Nowadays, coal tar dyes are synthetically engineered rather than extracted from actual coal tar, thereby greatly reducing the possibility of being contaminated with carcinogenic residuals from the coal itself. However, the dyes still contain carcinogenic properties. Over several decades of use, some of these synthetic dyes have come under greater scientific and government scrutiny due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic activity. Because of this, they are still referred to in the industry as – coal tar dyes – according to the US FDA.

Even if toothpaste is never swallowed, these dyes can be absorbed within seconds through the skin on the lips, or through the mucous membrane in the mouth. According to the Physician’s Desk Reference, the mucosal lining inside of the mouth has an absorption efficiency of over 90 percent. Because of this, these carcinogens get into your blood, your brain, and your cells in no time at all – especially when you consider most people use dental care products 2 to 3 times a day.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): The most dangerous ingredient

Perhaps the most dangerous ingredient in personal-care products is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Because SLS has a foaming property, it is added to toothpastes in order to generate foam and give the impression that the toothpaste is working. However, SLS has been found to be quite corrosive and harmful to skin tissue says a report by the American College of Toxicity.

In the cleaning industry, SLS is used in products such as garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Elsewhere, SLS is used for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin.

The journal of the American College of Toxicology reports that SLS can penetrate and be retained in the eye, brain, heart, and liver with potentially harmful longterm effects. Also found in most shampoos including “no tears” baby shampoos, SLS can keep children’s eyes from developing properly, can cause cataracts in adults, can retard healing, and can impair hair growth.

too much

Another thought to keep in mind is how much you use. If you are using as much as they show on TV then you are adding even MORE poison into your system.

If you have a mouth full of foam that you can hardly keep in your built in water well (you know, that well under your tongue) then this is probably you!

just right

Consider using a smaller amount. If you have the Oral B type of toothbrush then you are using the right amount. about the size of a pea.  oral b

Triclosan: A pesticide found in many types of toothpaste

Triclosan, a chemical used for its antibacterial properties, is an ingredient found in many detergents and toothpastes. However, the formulation and structure of this ingredient are similar to some of the most toxic chemicals on earth. Because of this fact, triclosan has been scrutinized in regards to human health and safety, according to Tufts University School of Medicine.

While the companies that manufacture products containing triclosan claim that it is safe, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a dangerous pesticide. The EPA gives triclosan high scores both as a human health risk and as an environmental risk.

Triclosan is a chlorophenol, which is a class of chemicals that is suspected of causing cancer in humans. Externally, phenol can cause a variety of skin irritations, but since it can temporarily deactivate sensory nerve endings, contact with it may cause little or no pain. Taken internally, even in small amounts, phenol can lead to cold sweats, circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma, and death. Additionally, chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides can be stored in body fat, sometimes accumulating to toxic levels. Long term exposure to repeated use of many pesticide products can damage the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs, suppress the immune system, and cause hormonal disruption, paralysis, sterility and brain hemorrhages.

Hydrated Silica: A whitener that damages tooth enamel

Hydrated silica, which is primarily used as an abrasive in toothpaste, is made from a crystallized compound found in quartz, sand, and flint. Tooth enamel re-mineralizes daily from the supply of ionic calcium and phosphorus in the saliva. Scratching the surface of the tooth with an abrasive such as hydrated silica harms the enamel and prevents re-mineralization, much like using sand to clean glass. Severe wear could eventually occur.

Dr. Samuel Epstein, who is Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition and recipient of The Alternative Nobel Prize in 1998, states in his book – The amount of irritation caused by toothpaste is minimal but can include sore mouth and gums, wearing away of tooth enamel, sore tongue, and sloughing of mucous membrane. The public is cautioned against excessive use of products containing ‘dioforms,’ which are abrasive substances that can cause the breakdown of tooth enamel.

Products containing the ingredients silica and cellulose, in particular, should be avoided when gum disease, tooth decay, sensitivity and receding gums are present. While these ingredients can remove tartar and make teeth whiter in appearance, they also may do harm to dental health by altering the acidic balance of the mouth, gums and tongue, said Dr. Warren Scherer, New York University College of Dentistry, as reported by The Naples Daily News.

One even has plastic. We all know that the BPA in plastics can be hazardous to our health, and yet it has been put into our toothpaste! see video

NingXia red and NingXia Nitro- Just an ounce a day is all you need!

club red

Ningxia Red: a real powerhouse! (pronounced Neeng-sha Red)

ningxia packets

Ningxia Red: those little packets that came in your kit that look like small Capri Sun packs.  I probably left mine in the fridge for at least a month before I  tried one; lets face it, the packaging doesn’t look very appetizing. But OH MY GOODNESS!  After I tried it I was like, “What was I waiting for?!?”  Even without chilling it, it is pretty good (lots of fruity essence and of course the ningxia wolfberry juice).  But it’s more than a yummy drink, well here, this is what I know about it:

  • it is a powerful antioxidant drink that contains whole Ningxia wolfberry puree—a super blend of blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices, natural stevia extract, grape seed extract, pure vanilla extract, and orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine essential oils. Its health benefits include support from head to toe, via a whole body nutrient infusion. NingXia Wolfberries have been cherished for centuries for its health, energy, and longevity benefits. Whole Ningxia wolfberries and other nutrient-dense fruit juices make NingXia Red the perfect choice for optimizing wellness and stepping up to a whole new level of health.
  • Let’s just say, if you have a health concern, a beauty concern, an emotional concern, a mental concern or just an energy concern, start drinking 1-2 oz. of this beautiful stuff once or twice every day.
  • While not technically an oil or oil blend, it is still oily because it has essential oils infused in it.
  • For me, it’s about getting enough antioxidants, especially when my fruit and veggie consumption isn’t up to par. And, you know we need those antioxidants to support our immune systems and fight nasty cancer cells.  Ningxia Red is the #1 antioxidant product on the market today.  It’s all about the Ningxia Wolfberry having “the highest known protection against the dangerous superoxide free radicals as documented in the S-ORAC test conducted by Brunswick Laboratories”.  Or we can just say it ‘s rich in all sorts of good stuff like polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals.
  •  I also love the energy boost it gives me in the afternoon. On those days when I need the extra boost, I am glad that i have it handy to get an extra shot for a pick me up!  I ordered Ningxia Red packets so I can take them when i travel. You can also add to a  healthy morning smoothie.  This is more of an endorsement if you know how this person doesn’t like vegetables and tells restaurant wait staff that she “eats like a 5 year old”.
  • Some drink it because it helps regulate blood sugar levels. I’ve read testimonies regarding type I diabetes; you can search in Drops of Love or oil-testimonies.com for more on that. (let me know if you want to be added to Drops of Love on Facebook)
  • Also check out oil-testimonies.com regarding Ningxia Red and rheumatiod arthritis, probably any auto-immune disorder: because of the immune boosting power of this stuff it is a great addition to dealing with those issues.
  • It helps give clarity when mental fatigue strikes.

ningxia bottles

  • I love it chilled, straight up, but some prefer it diluted in water or juice. Others like it in their morning smoothies.  I actually but some in a Mimosa last weekend!  You can buy it in 750ml bottles or boxes of 2 oz packets.  The glass bottles are kind of cool but I like to be able to keep a couple of packets in my purse so I usually go that route; personal preference.
  • and what about your kiddos… could anything be better than sending them off to school with a powerhouse ounce of vitamin filled goodness??

Now do you wanna know what is in this liquid gold??ningxia red

All that goodness is equal to the vitamins and antioxidants and all the wonderfullness of:

Pumpkin Nut Butter

IMG_8917

I absolutely ADORE pumpkin! I make pumpkin smoothies, homemade Pumpkin latte’s (I don’t trust all the added junk in the syrup at coffee houses), pumpkin soup, pumpkin cheesecake, and now…. pumpkin peanut butter! I had this at a friends house and became obsessed after I almost ate the entire confection!

Pumpkin Peanut (or almond) Butter

Ingredients:

1 C    Pumpkin Puree (not pie filling)

1 C    Peanut butter (or almond)

1/2 C Honey or maple sugar  (more/less to taste)

1 Tbsp Vanilla

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

Apple Slices for dipping into the deliciousness! or just a spoon!

Instructions:

blend all ingredients until smooth ( i used a vitamix the first time and a food processor the second)

cover and refrigerate for 30 min

serve with apple slices

Note: if using fresh ground peanut butter, this will not be as sweet as store bought sugared peanut butter mix. This also makes a great base/addition to a smoothie.

The Seed to Seal Promise, why this is so important!

Essential oils have been around since before the Bible was written. Now that is longevity! The reason why this is so interesting is that people have been using them as powerful healers well before Merck or GlaxoSmithKline made commercials touting the benefits of chemicals and all the side effects that go hand in hand.

IMG_5979

Now we have a company that has made it a priority to grow, harvest, distill the highest quality plants into usable oils that can help to relieve the discomfort of common ailments. The aim is to get these high quality oils into every home. The company is 20 years old, but the founder has been using them in clinics and the like for many years before beginning Young Living. There is a sign in the distillery that reminds all who pass through and work there that Quality is the priority. As simple as the sign is…It speaks volumes.

IMG_7419

Almost all of us have some sort of “issue” that bothers us. You might get headaches, while I live with a dog that I am allergic to, my husband snores and has some sleep apnea, my oldest child is full of stress with a new job and studying for her CPA exam, another one works outdoors and often cuts or burns himself. I could go on longer, but you get the idea.

Does this make you excited like it does me? want to read more about the promise of purity in bringing clean, powerful , healing oils from plants into our homes?

Thieves

thieves

Thieves, Just does SOOOO much! Especially, in this cold and flu Season. For example:

  • I put this on the bottoms of my feet  or rub on my hands before going somewhere germy like planes, malls and classrooms.  (Do you know of anyone else who goes on planes and into malls and classrooms?)
  • It is also great for sore teeth after braces adjustments. My friend used on her teeth and gums after having dental work done and my son swished with coconut oil after having all 4 wisdom teeth removed. That is how we fight bacterial infections here!
  • I gargled, swished, swallowed in a capsule and applied to my feet  when I thought I might be coming down with something. Then I have the family do the same thing.
  • I like to put a few drops in a small spray bottle with water and a little witch hazel to use as air freshener. (I was sure to shake well before spraying; as you know, oil and water don’t really mix.)
  • I bought the Thieves cleaner that is highly concentrated and use it on everything from mirrors and glass tabletops to the greasy stove.  (I just dilute accordingly.) And it smells SO good, not like the  chemically cloroxy can’t breathe stuff.
  • Diffuse, Diffuse, Diffuse. It just  smells sooo good and when tested at Weber State University, it was found to have a 99.96% kill rate on airborne bacteria!
  • and just a few more from my list of when to use: viruses, colds, flu, sore throats, bronchitis, strep, toothaches, gums, cold sores, infections, cuts, poison ivy, add a drop to wine, candida, coughs, pneumonia, fungus, strengthen immunity.
  • how to use: diffuse, ingest, topical. Dilute with a carrier oil if skin is sensitive.

This is one of Young Living’s (YL) most popular blends.

Love ya,

Stephanie

Start today and take control of your well being

Today is the day!! You are going to choose to make one healthy change in your life.

It is so easy to do ONE GOOD THING.

So, to help you get started, I am going to give you a get started list to choose from.

The Easy List:

1. Start walking. 1 mile. 3 miles. Whatever you can do. Commit to it at least 5 x/week.

2. Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water

3. Have a salad with lunch AND dinner

4. Don’t eat anything after dinner. (I know, I know, this is tough)

5. Every morning before you have anything else, drink warm water with half a fresh squeezed lemon (pull it out of fridge the night before so that it is at room temperature)

A little bit harder:

1. Give up all bread products for (just) one month. See if you feel better at the end.

2. For 5 weeks turn away from all dairy products

3. Lengthen your daily walk

4. If you like a relaxing cocktail at the end of the week (day even) switch to red wine

5. Enjoy the natural detox and add lemon (or lemon oil drops) to all of your water

Take it up a notch:

1. Say “no thank you” to sodas (here in the south, we call those cokes!)

2. For one week (you gotta start somewhere) don’t have anything processed. With a commercial, in a package or with a label.

3. Start doing push-ups before you step into the shower. One or 50. Just start.

4. Do planks before getting in the shower. This makes remembering to do it easier.

5. Begin to investigate the term “clean eating” (how about that! You don’t actually have to make a change with this one……yet)

Why these things you ask??

Start walking: this gets your body in gear. It uses muscles, this burns energy, but most importantly….your body was made to move and parts start breaking with they aren’t used.

Water: skin, elimination, organs (okay, so skin is also an organ), all of it…it all needs water. AND, when you are dining the right amount of water, you aren’t drinking sodas.

Salad: First of all we all need more vegetables. Second this will help to fill you up with real food, hopefully helping you to avoid (ahem) crappy food. It is also a good base to fill your nutritional needs.

Eating after dinner: again, there are multiple reasons why not to do…for many that is the dessert binge time. I am not saying that all desserts are verboten, but the later that you eat anything, the harder it is to digest. At night, your body is trying to go into sleep mode, digesting food interrupts that.

lemon water: the warm water going into your blood stream before anything else has a fantastic detoxing result. this also helps you to start the day off with WATER, which you probably need more of. lemon also has a TON of benefits (energy, nails and hair, anxiety, bloating, clarity, gallstones, constipation, oxygenates cells for optimal weight management, alkalizes body, boosts body’s defenses, detoxes digestive tract as well as liver) TIP: swish around in mouth to prepare your stomach for ultimate digestion.

IMG_4708 IMG_4973

Bread/gluten: I know this is such a hot topic right now. but the truth is that our food chain/supply has changed drastically over the last 60 years. it changed form being about nutrition to being about making money. As a result, the majority of the wheat that is produces for Americans today is altered, i like to call it adulterated. Our bodies can not process this Frankenwheat. Want to know more? Read “Wheat Belly” by Dr. William Davis, MD. What we have now, causes all kinds of disruptions in our bodies and is processed as if it is straight sugar. Let it go. I have yet to meet even one person that tried this and regretted it.

Dairy: A myth we have heard all of our lives, you need dairy. For bone strength, and for other reasons. want to know more? Start with the documentary Forks over Knives.  In the meantime, consider this…what other animal have you ever heard of that drinks another mothers milk…especially after the baby is weaned?

Longer walk: no explanation needed, just time to push slightly more.

Red wine: By now, just about all have heard that red wine is good for you. You do have to consider that moderation is important here. The benefits are that if you are having an adult beverage, red wine is less sugar, most tend to drink red wine more slowly. Less Alcohol. Less Sugar. All a good step forward.

Lemon all day: because of lemon previously mentioned benefits, adding it to all water is a good thing. It is even a better idea to add 100% therapeutic pure and organic Lemon essential oil from Young Living. I cant tell you the benefits that are possible. Well actually, I already told you a quite a few of the benefits of lemon, but the list goes on!

Soda: lots of reasons to just say no.

IMG_5797

Processed foods: Big food companies are in the business for the profit, not in concern for your health. The list of preservatives that are used along with another assortment of added chemicals that are not good for human consumption. Beginning to think about how to care for yourself will offer you large benefits as time goes on. think back to your grandparents. Often, they grew a good amount of their own food, and often canned any thing that they could.  Even going to the grocery was a very simple event. The grocery stores were only the size of what todays convenience stores look like. This says a lot!

Push ups and Planks: This is body strength. This is important. weight bearing activity builds stronger bones. This prepares us to build muscle and to turn on our internal furnace. It allows us to grow strong and to continue to climb stairs, carry groceries, take out the trash, go out to dinner, play with the grandkids….all the important stuff in life!

Clean eating: this is a newish term since our grandparents did this without thinking. It refers to eating organic, non-processed, single ingredient foods (that means when you eat zucchini it is ONLY zucchini)

So now GO FORTH and conquer a new GOOD habit. One step at a time towards lifelong health!!!

Ciao,

Stephanie

Beginning the journey to eating clean

How to Eat and Live clean

The soul of clean living is consuming food in its most natural state, or as close to it as possible. It is not a diet; it’s a lifestyle approach to food and its preparation, leading to an improved life- one meal at a time.

1. Eat 5-6 times a day: 3 meals and 2 small snacks. Include a lean protein, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and a complex carb with each meal. This keeps your body energized and burning calories efficiently all day.

2. Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily: filtered, and in a reusable bottle so we don’t fill up the landfills at the same time.

3. Get label savvy: Clean foods contain one or 2 ingredients only. any product with a long list is human made and not considered clean- it is just that a product.

4.  Avoid processed and refined foods: white sugar, white flour, bread and pasta. Enjoy complex carbs such as whole grain instead.

5. Know they enemies: Steer clear of anything high in saturated and trans fats, anything fried or high in sugar along with those high in Fructose Corn Syrup.

6. Shop with a conscience: consume humanely raised and local meets. The good news is that this benefits you as much or more than the animals!

7. Consume healthy fats everyday: avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, to name a few

8. Learn about portion sizes: and work toward eating within them.

9. Reduce your carbon footprint: eat produce that is seasonal and local. it is less taxing on your wallet and the environment. it also provides more for your body as far a s nutrients.

10. Limit the alcohol: there are some benefits of red wine but they are reversed after more than one glass a day. it should be a rare indulgence. Instead drink water with a lemon wedge, the lemon provides your body some goodness, too.

11. Slow down and savor: enjoy every bite by not rushing through a meal. There is a new movement (can’t believe it has come to this) called “Slow Food”- they hope to get people to slow down and enjoy. This too is good for our bodies, where a drive through and eating on the run are actually bad because it adds more stress!

12. Take it to go: pack a cooler so that you don’t get hungry and tempted to grab a poor choice.

13. Make it a family affair: food is social glue that should be shared with loved ones. Improve the quality of your family’s health along with your own.
